AFFAIRS OF CHINA.
[July 20.]
CONFIDENTIAL,
Acce Pre 12 AUG 10
SECTION 1.
No. 1.
[24759]
(No. 247.) Sir,
Sir Edward Grey to Mr. Max Müller.
Foreign Office, July 20, 1910. I TRANSMIT to you herewith a copy of a letter from the India Office,* covering a despatch from the Government of India, with enclosures, on the subject of the objections raised by the Chinese local authorities against the position of certain boundary cairns erected on the Burmah-China frontier.
You will observe that, not content with the demolition of one of the supplementary pillars, of which you are already aware, the Prefect of Yung Chang has now raised objection to the position of boundary cairns 9-14.
I request that, in accordance with the wish of the Secretary of State for India, you will bring this matter to the notice of the Chinese Government, and inform them that His Majesty's Government can in no circumstances allow the accuracy of these cairns, which has been unchallenged for ten years, to be now called in question.
I am, &c.
E. GREY.
